Do not plan around a single direct airport-to-arena train. From the Domestic Terminal, take the subway to Hakata and then a venue-bound bus. From the International Terminal, either use the A bus to Hakata Station’s Chikushi side or take the free inter-terminal shuttle to the Domestic Terminal and join the subway. Think of the trip in two stages.
Fukuoka Airport is close to the city, but “close” does not remove the variables of an arrival day. A flight delay, baggage reclaim, immigration, terminal transfer and the walk across Hakata Station are separate pieces of time. Subtracting a scheduled landing time from the first bout you hope to see is not a reliable door-to-seat calculation.
Arriving on a domestic flight
The Domestic Terminal is directly connected to Fukuoka-kuko (Airport) Station. The clearest official-information route is to take the subway to Hakata, then follow the Japan Sumo Association’s directions from the F stop by the Fukuoka Center Building: route 88 to Kokusai Kaigijo/Sunpalace-mae, or route 99 to Kokusai Center/Sunpalace-mae.
There is still a walk between the subway and the correct street-level bus stop. A quoted five-minute rail ride is one component, not the entire airport-to-arena journey. Save the subway exit and the bus-stop name separately, especially if you will be navigating with luggage.
Arriving on an international flight
The International Terminal is not directly connected to the subway station. Current official sources support two practical choices:
- Take bus A from international stops 6 or 7 to Hakata Station’s Chikushi Exit. Nishitetsu currently lists an adult fare of ¥400 and an approximate journey of 18 minutes. Treat both as live transport information, not a guarantee in traffic.
- Take the airport’s free inter-terminal shuttle to the Domestic Terminal, then use the subway. Shuttle departures are estimates, and construction has changed airport stops before.
Bus A arrives on the Chikushi side of Hakata Station. The F stop for the arena bus is not an immediate same-platform transfer. Include time to cross the station. With children, mobility needs or a heavy case, compare lifts and walking distance as well as the number of vehicles.
Do not bring a suitcase on faith
We have not found a current official promise of a public cloakroom at Fukuoka Kokusai Center that will accept an airline-size suitcase. Do not arrive assuming the arena will solve the problem.
Fukuoka Airport officially lists coin lockers in both terminals, including units that accept transport IC cards. Availability is not guaranteed, and bags cannot be deposited or retrieved while a terminal is closed. Hotel storage or same-day airport delivery can be useful, but eligibility, cutoff time and arrival time must be checked with the service on your travel date.
A small spectator bag does more than protect seat space. It lets you stop safely, find the correct return stop and keep the ticket, medication, power and valuables under your own control.
Build an arrival-day plan that can bend
Decide in advance what still counts as a good day if the flight is late. “I must see everything from the doors opening” is brittle. A better plan has two wins: enjoy the quieter early divisions if the journey runs smoothly, and still arrive calmly for the part you value if it does not.
If you make it early, listen once to the yobidashi working around the ring before the building fills, then compare that sound later. The arena changes not only in volume but in texture. Noticing that shift turns the airport transfer from dead time into the opening movement of a tournament day.
We will recheck airport construction, shuttle stops, bus A, subway service, arena buses and baggage services on November 1 and on the travel date. Live operator information overrides every fare and timing in this guide.
Detailed description of this diagram
The FACT card shows domestic and international start tokens feeding separately into a later journey decision; it is not an airport plan. UNKNOWN uses a luggage box, broken line and question token for unguaranteed locker space, operations, transfers, walking and admission continuity. FALLBACK branches after a stop token so the article can choose to store baggage, go to a hotel first or enter the event later. No terminal position, shuttle route, subway line, bus stop, distance, timetable, fare or availability is depicted.

Walk the real journey from arrivals to your seat
Confirmed fact: Fukuoka Airport confirms that the Domestic Terminal connects to the subway, while International arrivals use a separate route such as the free terminal shuttle.
What remains unknown: No official source gives a complete arrivals-door-to-seat time including immigration, baggage, traffic and the walk across Hakata Station.
Reasoned inference: Comparing the official terminal routes suggests that an International arrival creates extra decision points. This concerns decisions, not minutes. A published event shuttle or terminal change would overturn it.
Editorial suggestion: With a companion, let one person manage the case and the other check live service, then move together. This is not an airport rule; it avoids one person handling phone, case and wayfinding at once.
Fallback: Stop at the airport or Hakata Station, solve luggage first and switch to later entry.
