First-time sumo etiquette: the practical version
You do not need to know every tradition.
A few things matter:
- Watch from your assigned seat.
- Avoid blocking other spectators during bouts.
- Do not throw seat cushions.
- Do not touch wrestlers or officials.
- Do not wait around the venue for wrestlers to arrive or leave.
- Tamari seats do not allow food or drink.
- Follow the rules for your own seat type.
The point is not to make sumo intimidating. It is to keep the day comfortable for everyone.
