There is more to a regional sumo tour than the bouts. Morning practice, ring-entering ceremonies, sumo songs and demonstrations give you other ways into the sport, even if you have only recently started watching the tournaments.

The 2026 autumn tour runs from Tsukuba on October 6 to Ube on October 25. I have also checked the door-ticket announcements for the upcoming Tsukuba and Ebina events.

October 5 update: Kitanowaka added to the autumn tour

On October 5, the Japan Sumo Association announced Hoshoryu’s absence from the autumn tour and the addition of Kitanowaka. The five replacement participants listed in the report are Kazuma, Mitakeumi, Kitanowaka, Ryuden and Enho.

On October 5, Hoshoryu said he could join the autumn tour in Matsumoto on October 10 if his medical examination on October 8 raises no concerns. He will miss the opening day on October 6; joining later remains conditional on the examination results. Check the local organizer’s latest notices before traveling.

Tsukuba announces door tickets for October 6 but has not specified when sales start; 9 a.m. is the opening time. Ebina sells limited door tickets in selected categories from 8:30 a.m. on October 7.

Tsukuba: door tickets announced

Tuesday, October 6, at Tsukuba Capio Arena. In an update dated October 3, the organizer announced that tickets would be sold on the day of the event.

Doors and public practice are scheduled for 9:00 a.m.; the event is due to finish at 2:30 p.m. The 9:00 a.m. opening time is not a confirmed start time for ticket sales. The announcement does not specify the sales time, ticket counter, seat categories, prices or quantity available. Do not assume the regular price list confirms the door-ticket terms; check the organizer’s latest information before traveling.

Tsukuba: organizer’s event information

Outdoor shoes are not permitted inside, and visitors are asked to bring slippers. There is no visitor parking for this event; plan to use public transport.

Ebina: door-ticket sales start at 8:30 a.m.

For Wednesday, October 7, the Ebina organizer’s September 28 notice says door tickets will go on sale at 8:30 a.m. at the ticket counter by the venue entrance. Only selected seat categories are available, in limited quantities.

The notice includes single-person masu seats at ¥15,000, with a limit of two tickets per buyer. These seats cannot be arranged next to a companion’s seat. If sitting together matters to you, check the conditions before buying.

Ebina: organizer’s door-ticket notice

The 8:30 a.m. time is for ticket sales. Keep it separate from door-opening times and from arrangements at other tour stops.

How is a tour different from a tournament?

The Japan Sumo Association describes regional tours as a way to promote sumo, support local communities and encourage young people. Wrestlers visit different locations, with opportunities to see practice and sumo traditions as well as bouts.

Official tournament and regional tour
What to check Official tournament Regional tour
Dates A fifteen-day tournament at one venue Different stops; check the date for your chosen location
Results Tournament records contribute to the rankings Tour bouts are not added to the official tournament win–loss record
What you can see Bouts across the divisions, ring-entering ceremonies and more Bouts, public practice and demonstrations such as shokkiri and sumo jinku; check the local program

A tour ticket does not guarantee personal access to wrestlers or the appearance of a particular wrestler. Follow the staff’s instructions about access and photography.

Morning practice can give the afternoon a familiar face

The Association’s sample day begins with the opening and morning practice, moves into bouts before noon, then reaches the top-division and yokozuna ring-entering ceremonies and top-division bouts in the afternoon. Demonstrations such as shokkiri and sumo jinku are also part of the day.

Shokkiri introduces things such as prohibited moves through a demonstration. Sumo jinku features the wrestlers’ singing. They invite you to watch and listen in a different way from a competitive bout.

I would like to remember the name of one wrestler who catches my attention during practice. If he appears again in the afternoon, there is that little feeling of recognition: that’s the person I was watching earlier.

You do not have to stay from opening to closing. Choose a plan that works for you and your companions. The Association’s timetable is a sample; use your event’s own opening and finishing times. Tsukuba is scheduled to finish at 2:30 p.m.

Japan Sumo Association: a day on tour

Three checks before you leave

  1. Tickets and seating. Check the sales time, location, categories and availability, not just whether door tickets were announced. Reopen the current notice before traveling.
  2. Travel and what to bring. Footwear, parking and permitted items depend on the venue. Tsukuba’s request to bring slippers is not a rule for every stop.
  3. Late changes to appearances and the program. An early promotional poster does not guarantee that a particular wrestler will attend. Check the latest local notice.

For the currently announced stops, see the Japan Sumo Association’s 2026 tour schedule.

Information checked

Participant information includes the October 5, 2026 announcement; door-ticket information was checked on October 4. A door-ticket announcement does not guarantee that you will be able to buy a ticket. Availability, appearances and event-day arrangements can change.
