On Day 5, Churanoumi defeated Kotozakura, leaving no unbeaten wrestler in Makuuchi. Ura and Asanoyama also moved to 4–1. In Juryo, Kayo, Kagayaki, Kitanowaka and Daiseizan all reached five straight wins. Here is a look back at the day, with tables covering all 20 Makuuchi and 14 Juryo bouts.

Three parts of the Day 5 story
Churanoumi beats Kotozakura; nine Makuuchi wrestlers stand at 4–1
Churanoumi defeated Ozeki Kotozakura, who had won his first four bouts, by oshidashi, a frontal push-out. Both finished at 4–1, leaving no unbeaten wrestler in Makuuchi. In the final bout, Yokozuna Onosato beat Yoshinofuji by yorikiri, a frontal force-out, to reach 4–1 as well.
At the end of Day 5, the 9 wrestlers at 4–1 were Toshinofuji, Ura, Asanoyama, Roga, Atamifuji, Kirishima, Churanoumi, Kotozakura and Onosato. As you look through the standings, you can also find your favourite wrestler’s bout in the tables below.
Ura wins by sotogake; Asanoyama by tsukiotoshi
Ura and Wakamotoharu both entered their bout at 3–1. Ura won by sotogake, an outside leg trip, moving to 4–1 while Wakamotoharu fell to 3–2. Asanoyama and Takerufuji also met with matching 3–1 records; Asanoyama won by tsukiotoshi, a thrust-down, to reach 4–1.
Asakoryu lost to Tokihayate by hatakikomi, a slap-down, leaving both at 3–2. Tamawashi, ranked Juryo 3, appeared on the Makuuchi card that day and lost to Chiyoshoma by yorikiri. Tamawashi finished at 1–4 and Chiyoshoma at 3–2.
Four Juryo wrestlers reach five straight wins; Tanji wins by default
Kayo beat Tochikodai by hatakikomi; Kagayaki beat Meisei by yorikiri; Kitanowaka beat Midorifuji by uwatenage, an overarm throw; and Daiseizan beat Mitakeumi by yorikiri. Kayo, Kagayaki, Kitanowaka and Daiseizan all finished at 5–0.
Tanji received a win by default against Nabatame to reach 4–1. We distinguish this from a bout fought on the dohyo. Ryuden beat Enho by yorikiri to move to 3–2, while Hatsuyama beat Tomokaze by oshidashi for his first win of the tournament.

- Ryuden — Enho: Ryuden won by yorikiri to finish at 3–2. Enho finished at 2–3.
- Kitanowaka — Midorifuji: Kitanowaka won by uwatenage to reach 5–0. Midorifuji finished at 3–2.
- Daiseizan — Mitakeumi: Daiseizan won by yorikiri to reach 5–0. Mitakeumi finished at 1–4.
