Tamawashi’s official questionnaire mentions his love of making small crafts, including a doormat. The same hands push an opponent across the ring. Once I know about both the power and the careful handiwork, I find myself watching his hands.
More than six wins in ten came by push-out
The Association’s six-tournament breakdown lists oshidashi, a frontal push-out, at 61%; yorikiri, a force-out, at 11%; and oshitaoshi, a frontal push-down, at 7%. More than six out of every ten wins in that breakdown came from pushing an opponent out. Can he keep the space he needs to push when someone closes in? Do his feet keep moving after his hands have pushed? I want to watch the two together.
East Juryo 3 in September, with Kazuma on opening day
After a 9–6 July at East Juryo 7, he was ranked East Juryo 3 for September. Kazuma was his announced opening-day opponent. Tamawashi made his professional debut in January 2004 and his top-division debut in September 2008; his highest rank is sekiwake. Asked about favourite food, he chose eating together with lots of people rather than a particular dish. Answering with the company he enjoys is another small detail that makes me remember him.
