Shishi won the first six days of July. Further wins on Days 8 and 9 gave him eight wins by Day 9, and he finished 10–5. From West Maegashira 14, he rose to a career-high West Maegashira 9 for September.

Nearly as many wins by grappling as by pushing

The Association’s six-tournament breakdown lists oshidashi, a frontal push-out, at 32%; yorikiri, a force-out, at 30%; and oshitaoshi, a frontal push-down, at 8%. His listed strength is pushing, but force-outs account for almost the same share. I do not want to assume that failing to get the belt means he is in trouble. How far did he move the opponent back before taking hold? His size and the distance he actually carries an opponent are two different things to watch.

Read the six opponents’ names, too

His six opening wins came against Onokatsu, Takerufuji, Daiseizan, Kazuma, Ryuden and Asakoryu. He lost the last three days to Kotozakura, Atamifuji and Roga. Knowing both the strong start and the late losses puts some rise and fall back into the single line “ten wins.” Ura was his announced September opening-day opponent. I wondered what distance that bout would begin from.

Starting sumo at twenty-one

In his official questionnaire, Shishi says he began sumo at twenty-one. His professional debut came in March 2020, his Juryo debut in July 2023 and his Makuuchi debut in November 2024. His favourite food is sushi, especially sweet shrimp. After memorising 193 cm and 182 kg, knowing that particular favourite makes a once-distant ring name feel a little closer.
