A fictional training miniature inspired by Asahakuryu, poised with both hands resting on his own thighs.

After day 9 in July, Asahakuryu was 2–7. He then went 5–1 over the final 6 days to finish 7–8. It was still a losing record, but reading the sequence in the second half changes how I feel about waiting for his next tournament.

Once he has a grip, how far can he keep moving forward?

The Association’s six-tournament display showed yorikiri, a force-out, at 63%; oshidashi, a push-out, at 23%; and tsukiotoshi, a thrust-down, at 5%. More than 6 in 10 were force-outs. With his right hand inside, can he close the distance without letting his opponent draw his hips away? As the other wrestler’s feet approach the straw boundary, can he keep his belt grip in place? Knowing those proportions makes me interested in the last few steps.

His top-division debut came in January 2026
