In July, Tokihayate went 10–5 at east juryo 2. He returned to makuuchi as west maegashira 15 for September. Knowing that his route included a 4–11 top-division tournament in May gives those 10 juryo wins more meaning than a good record alone.

From a left-hand grip: forward, or around?

The Association’s six-tournament display showed yorikiri, a force-out, at 28%; uwatenage, an overarm throw, at 17%; and oshidashi, a push-out, at 14%. A left-hand-inside grip, force-outs and overarm throws are all listed as his strengths. After his left arm goes inside, an opponent drawing his hips away changes the belt position; an opponent standing firm narrows the way forward. I want to see what kind of resistance makes him turn to a throw.

The opening-day pairing was with 195 cm Toshinofuji

His scheduled September opening-day opponent was top-division newcomer Toshinofuji. Tokihayate’s official height was 179 cm. I won’t decide who has the advantage from that difference alone; I want to watch the arms as they work towards their grips. Tokihayate made his makuuchi debut in May 2024 and had reached a highest rank of maegashira 9. His questionnaire names rice as a favourite food and Haikyu!! as a favourite work. I’ll remember those alongside his hometown of Kurihara in Miyagi.
