For an arrival-day visit to Nagoya sumo, make “leave the suitcase at the hotel” your first plan and “store it at the airport” your second. Centrair lists coin lockers in Access Plaza, but that does not guarantee an empty compartment large enough for your case. Do not infer that IG Arena will accept a large spectator bag. Build the journey so that you reach the venue with one small day bag.
Decide where you will collect the case
The best storage point is not necessarily the first locker you see. Start with the end of the day. Airport storage can be logical if you will return to the airport. If you are sleeping in central Nagoya, travelling back to the airport only to recover luggage adds time, fare and another possible delay.
Ask your accommodation whether it stores a registered guest’s luggage before check-in, after check-out or both. Record the booking name, desk hours and latest collection time. A short hotel stop can also turn the complicated railway transfer into a calmer trip with only the objects needed for sumo.
Centrair’s official facilities page places coin lockers in Access Plaza. It confirms that the facility exists, not live capacity, exact dimensions for your case or access at every hour. Include the route from your arrival terminal to Access Plaza. A Terminal 2 arrival should not be treated as if the locker and railway gate were beside the baggage carousel.
Compare three plans by the same questions
- Hotel storage: useful for a city stay. Confirm eligibility, acceptance hours and collection conditions directly with the hotel.
- Airport locker: simple when your trip returns to Centrair. Check availability, size, payment method and whether terminal closure affects retrieval.
- Forwarding: potentially useful for a multi-night or onward trip. Same-day arrival is not automatic; check the acceptance deadline, destination coverage and delivery window.
Keep medicine, passport, valuables, ticket access and a power source with you. Summer heat may require water and cooling items, but the current tournament’s spectator rules should decide what may enter the building.
Remove “the arena will solve it” from the itinerary
IG Arena’s FAQ shows that several operational questions, including re-entry, depend on the event organiser. A permanent building feature therefore does not prove that a grand-sumo event will run a cloakroom for large cases. Unless the organiser confirms the service, plan as if it is unavailable.
A smaller bag changes more than seat comfort. It leaves your hands and attention free during the walk between Meitetsu and the subway. After you sit down, watch the yobidashi rather than a wrestler for just one bout. The same attention that managed a suitcase through an airport can now notice the quiet work that resets the ring.
Save the night before
- Hotel storage conditions and final collection time
- Official airport page showing the locker location
- A second plan if lockers are full
- Medicine, passport, ticket and power kept in the day bag
- Post-bout collection point and final destination
Rehearse the trip down to your hands and feet
Confirmed fact: Centrair lists coin lockers in the Access Plaza. That confirms a facility, not an empty compartment large enough for your case when you land.
What remains unknown: We cannot confirm your actual walk from a particular arrival door, live availability, or the compartment that will fit. Picture the body problem: one hand pulls the case, the other needs the phone or rail, and your feet still have to find lifts and platform edges.
Reasoned inference: Overlaying the official facility location with the rail journey suggests that airport storage usually adds a return leg when you sleep in central Nagoya. This covers the extra leg, not a promised number of minutes. A hotel refusing storage, disruption, or an onward flight from Centrair would overturn it.
Editorial suggestion: The night before, carry the actual spectator bag in one hand, open the ticket page with the other, and cross one ordinary threshold in your travel shoes. This is not an arena rule; it reveals whether the bag removes the hand or balance you rely on.
Fallback: If plan A fails, change plans in the arrivals area. Entering sumo later is valid; an unverified arena cloakroom is not a rescue plan.
