Preserve the official kimarite as the raw record; never overwrite it with an independent “pushing” or “throwing” family. New daily results, an official display update, transcription repair, denominator change and mapping-table change require distinct version reasons.
Results accumulate one day at a time during a tournament. A row added through normal progression is different from a correction to yesterday’s row, even if both share the same extraction date. Retain bout ID, retrieval time, official label, result state and raw release version.
Separate raw evidence from derived tables
The raw table stores tournament, day, division, wrestler IDs, result, official kimarite, default or non-technique flag, official URL and retrieval time. The derived table stores denominator definition, technique family, mapping version, code version and hash of the raw release.
An empty official field does not explain itself. Do not fill it from personal video interpretation. Store “not displayed; reason unknown”; if a label appears later, preserve the former display, retrieval time and new official value.
Independent “pushing” and “throwing” families are our analytical interpretation, not an Association taxonomy. Another defensible mapping of a boundary technique could produce a contrary share. Keep the official 82 techniques and five non-technique outcomes intact, and publish the mapping, alternatives and reason for every change.
The important distinction is that an official kimarite label is evidence for the recorded finish, whereas an independent family is an analytical convenience. Do not confuse a change in our mapping with an Association correction.
Five change classes
Distinguish tournament progression, official display update, transcription correction, interpretation correction and aggregation or mapping-definition change. Accidentally including a default in the technique denominator is interpretation correction. Moving a technique between independent families is a definition change.
After any change, validation confirms that technique counts reconcile with contested bouts, each official label maps no more than once, and unrounded shares reconcile with the declared denominator. Every affected article, chart and structured-data output is rebuilt in the same release.
If counts, mapping or denominator fail to reconcile, do not force the shares to look complete. Quarantine the proposed release, retain the last verified version and disclose the unresolved count. “No new percentage yet” is a valid data state.
Current management baseline (unpublished working version)
- 4 September 2026, v1.0 working version: official kimarite, default, non-technique and not-displayed are separate states.
- 4 September 2026, v1.0 working version: official labels and independent technique families occupy separate fields and versions.
- Next validation: after retrieving daily results for the target tournament, reconcile counts against its scorecard after the tournament ends.
Copyediting does not advance the dataset version. Even when totals remain unchanged, changing a denominator or mapping creates a new release; the incompatible former definition stays visible.
Let one correction reopen the technique
After repairing one label, watch another bout carrying the same official technique. Two finishes that look nearly identical can diverge in the final displacement. Noticing that difference turns correction work into exactly the kind of small detour that makes sumo more absorbing.
Freeze the Question Before Reading the Result
The research question is whether the defined metric differs under the article’s stated conditions. “There should be a difference” is a hypothesis, not a conclusion entered before counting. Preserve a contrary result, and treat a small difference, heavy missingness or incomparable conditions as grounds to hold the conclusion.
