Shonannoumi went 11–4 at east juryo 6 in July. His name appeared at east maegashira 17 on the September rankings, bringing him back to makuuchi. His official height was 193 cm. After noticing his size, I also want to see where those hands reach on an opponent.
Slap-downs 27%, overarm throws 16%
The Association’s six-tournament display showed hatakikomi, a slap-down, at 27%; oshidashi, a push-out, at 19%; and uwatenage, an overarm throw, at 16%. His listed strengths are a left-hand-inside grip, force-out sumo and pushing, yet the most frequent recent finish was a slap-down. The hands have different jobs before the opponent comes close and after they enter belt-gripping distance. I want to watch how the opponent receives pressure from above, and which way his feet move.
From Oiso, under a Shonan name
He is from Oiso in Kanagawa and has used the name Shonannoumi since his professional debut in March 2014. He reached juryo in January 2023 and makuuchi in July that year. His official questionnaire names Shonan no Kaze and Southern All Stars among his favourite music, and Naruto as a favourite work. Dewanoryu, the top-ranked juryo wrestler on the east, was his scheduled September opening-day opponent.
