A fictional miniature inspired by Mitakeumi, leaning forward in an unbleached practice mawashi.

Mitakeumi’s July tournament ended 2–13 at west maegashira 11. For September he was west juryo 4. Seeing how close push-outs and force-outs are in his winning-technique figures makes me want to follow a belt-gripping bout as a continuation of the movement that began with a push.

Moving forward before and after they come together

The Association’s six-tournament display showed oshidashi, a push-out, at 33%; yorikiri, a force-out, at 31%; and hatakikomi, a slap-down, at 13%. His listed strengths are thrusting and pushing. When an opponent reaches for the belt, does he keep pushing or come together and drive forward? Remembering where on the dohyo that distance changed can reveal different exchanges behind the same final label of yorikiri.

He reached makuuchi in the year he began

He entered professional sumo in March 2015, reached juryo that July and makuuchi in November. His ozeki promotion was in March 2022. The official questionnaire lists walking with his attendants as a hobby and playfulness as the quality he thinks is his best. He is from Agematsu in Nagano, and Harry Potter is a favourite work. Those are details I want to know alongside the bouts.
