Meisei finished July 4–11 at west juryo 7 and was ranked east juryo 13 for September. His highest rank is sekiwake. With that earlier position in mind, I want to follow how far he can establish the left-hand-inside grip he favours.
Yorikiri 25% and tsukiotoshi 18%
Oshidashi at 11% follows these two techniques in the Association’s six-tournament figures. Meisei wants to get his left arm inside, but if the opponent blocks it, the exchange can stall before he reaches the belt. How does he respond when the opponent moves forward from there? Separating the bouts in which he achieves the left-hand-inside position from those that finish without it makes the breakdown of wins more tangible.
Back to his debut in May 2011
The official record places his debut at the May 2011 technical examination tournament. He reached juryo in November 2016, entered makuuchi in July 2018 and made his sanyaku debut in July 2021. His official questionnaire lists mochi among his favourite foods and Donketsu among his favourite works. He is from Setouchi, Kagoshima. Kayo was announced as his opponent for September’s opening day.
