A new leaf.

A small, still-curled new leaf, paler than the surrounding leaves, on a plant by the window at night.

When I opened the curtains this morning, I noticed a tiny new leaf on the plant by the window.

It was still curled up, a paler green than the leaves around it. How long had it been there? I walk right past it every day.

I picked up my bag and was heading for the door, then went back for one more look. Yes, definitely a new leaf. That made me a little happy.

When I got home this evening, I had to look again.

Had it opened a little more? Or was it much the same? I hadn’t taken a picture in the morning, so I had nothing to compare it with. I wished I had.

This time I fetched my phone. Too close and the leaf went blurry, so I moved back a little and took a picture. Zooming in on the photo, I could see right to the tip of the curl.

It’s so tiny, but it’s already a proper little leaf!

I wanted to touch it, but left it alone. Even after putting my phone down, I stayed there for a moment, looking at it from the side.

I want to see it open. But I rather like it curled up like this, too.
