Fujinokawa’s Kyoto connection: why the record reaches back to 1828

An imagined miniature of Fujinokawa in a blue mawashi, taking his stance on the dohyo.

1828 appeared while I was reading about a new Sekiwake in 2026. Was Kyoto really absent from sumo for 198 years? That is not what the record says.

The missing words are “new Sekiwake and sanyaku”

The JSA’s September ranking notes identify Hiodoshi in October 1828 as the previous wrestler from Kyoto to make those rank debuts. The interval concerns a particular promotion milestone, not the existence of Kyoto wrestlers.

Back to Fujinokawa’s own wins

His July 2026 record brings us much closer to the present: 8–7 at Maegashira 1, an Outstanding Performance prize and victories over Onosato and Hoshoryu on consecutive days. September is his first sanyaku appearance, at Sekiwake.

I can remember both scales now: 198 years in the regional record, and two days against Yokozuna in the most recent tournament. His fuller introduction follows the wrestler behind those numbers.
