The September Kokugikan food guide, announced by the Japan Sumo Association on 7 September, introduces a new dish associated with Asanoyama-seki: “Umaiccha-wanmushi”. It is a chilled savoury egg custard.

A food name can introduce a wrestler

The official description connects the dish with Asanoyama-seki’s fondness for chawanmushi and a Toyama expression in its name. A menu can offer a small connection to a wrestler’s interests and home region before you know their results.

One useful note before you go

The listed price is ¥750 including tax, at Sushi-dokoro Raiden on the east side of the second floor. Ingredients mentioned include yellowtail, prawn, shiitake, ginkgo nuts, salmon roe and crab. Check dietary requirements with the seller.

Our suggestion is to note one dish and its location, leaving room for the bouts you want to watch. There is no need to turn a sumo visit into a food checklist.

An announcement, not a tasting review

We have not tasted this dish. The article reports the official menu announcement; availability and details may change. Check the September food guide before visiting.
