Tobizaru’s Association profile lists him at 173 cm and 135 kg, with pushing as his speciality. But yorikiri, a force-out, leads his six-tournament winning-technique breakdown at 18%. Once I see how many different ways those wins end, I want to keep watching the bouts where he gets hold of the belt too.

After the opponent changes direction

Oshidashi, a frontal push-out, accounts for 15%; tsukiotoshi, a thrust-down, for 12%; and other finishes for 55%. When a face-to-face pushing exchange shifts sideways, where do Tobizaru’s feet go next? I want to follow him beneath an opponent’s arms, rather than just compare their heights. “Other” does not mean rare techniques alone, so I check the recorded finish one bout at a time.

Photography, playing cards and a distinctive laugh

He went 5–10 at West Maegashira 9 in July and was East Maegashira 14 for September. His highest rank is komusubi, and his record at the time of this profile included three kinboshi, wins over a yokozuna earned as a maegashira. His official questionnaire lists photography and playing cards as hobbies, and beauty care and his distinctive way of laughing among his personal strengths. Koji Tamaki and Yashiki Takajin appear in his favourite music. Asakoryu was his announced opening-day opponent.
