Asked where he thinks he is number one in sumo, Wakatakakage chose ottsuke: the arm pressure used to keep an opponent from getting an inside grip. He has given me a name for a contest I want to watch more closely. Instead of waiting for the final force-out, I want to start with whether the other wrestler can get an arm inside at all.
There is technique before the right-hand grip
The Association’s six-tournament display showed yorikiri, a force-out, at 42%; oshidashi, a push-out, at 21%; and tsukiotoshi, a thrust-down, at 8%. His listed strengths are a right-hand-inside grip and force-out sumo. Is he getting his own right arm inside while controlling the opponent’s arm? Looking for that makes me want to revise the notes I had started only after the belt grip was in place. His record also included 7 Technique Prizes and 2 top-division championships.
The September announcement said he would be absent from day one
He missed the whole July tournament at east sekiwake, and his September ranking was east maegashira 12. The Association’s notice updated on 11 September announced his absence from the opening day. That notice gave neither a reason nor a return date. Asked about favourite works, he answered that he was devoted to ONE PIECE. At the time of this profile, I was looking back through earlier bouts and waiting for further official news about his participation.
