Keep the flight-sized suitcase away from your Kokugikan seat. Check hotel storage first, airport storage or delivery second, and a station locker only as a backup. As of September 2, 2026, we have not confirmed an official January 2027 Kokugikan cloakroom or large-luggage service. Locker capacity and availability are never guaranteed, so save one alternative before travel.
A suitcase occupies more than floor space. It asks you to watch the aisle, protect the handle and wonder whether you are inconveniencing the people beside you. The goal is to cross the gate with one day bag and let the call of the yobidashi replace the rattle of wheels.
Ask the hotel before paying for another service
Pre-check-in or post-check-out storage is often the simplest solution when the specific property confirms it. It is not a universal entitlement attached to every hotel or rate. Before booking, ask about the date, operating hours, size limits, whether storage is free for guests, and the final same-day collection time.
Do not rely only on a booking-platform filter that says “luggage storage.” Keep the property’s current condition or written answer. On a departure day, include the full return from Kokugikan to the hotel, collection process and onward airport journey in the schedule.
Storage and delivery at the airports
Haneda Airport’s official storage page currently says baggage can be held for up to two weeks. It lists a maximum combined dimension of 300 cm and weight of 30 kg, while warning that some shapes may not be accepted. Counters, fees and operating details must be checked for the terminal and date. Haneda also lists lockers and delivery separately.
Narita Airport publishes terminal-by-terminal storage, locker and delivery information. Counter locations and hours differ. Some same-day delivery services have acceptance cutoffs and limited delivery areas. “The airport offers delivery” does not prove that your bag, arrival time and hotel are eligible.
Commercial storage or delivery links on this site should appear only after the free hotel check. They must be labelled, and changing fees or hours should remain on the provider’s live page rather than being presented as permanent facts here.
Treat a Ryogoku locker as Plan C
The Tokyo transport authority lists coin lockers among the facilities at Toei Ryogoku Station. It does not promise a particular number of large lockers or availability on a tournament day. Arriving with a suitcase and discovering every suitable compartment occupied is not a workable primary plan.
JR Ryogoku and Toei Ryogoku are separate stations. If a locker remains your backup, note which station you will use for the arena, where you need to go after collecting the case, and whether the route requires stairs. Never store a passport, medicine needed during the day or the device holding your ticket where you cannot reach it.
If the tournament is on arrival day
Build space for flight delay, immigration, baggage reclaim, customs, storage and the transfer to Ryogoku. The duration of those steps is not guaranteed. As of this verification date, the tournament dates are published, but January 2027 opening times and date-specific entry operations are not.
Whenever possible, arrive in Tokyo the day before. If same-day attendance cannot be avoided, choose a plan where delay has limited consequences, confirm storage operating hours, and decide in advance what you will do if you miss part of the programme. A scarce opening-day or final-day ticket is a particularly fragile match for an international arrival.
If the tournament is on departure day
The correct airport-arrival deadline depends on the airline, flight, baggage and international formalities. This article does not invent one universal number. Work backwards from the airline’s current requirements, then add the crowd leaving Kokugikan, the hotel collection, airport transport and movement inside your terminal.
If you want to stay through the final bouts—or the awards on the final day—the most reliable plan is to fly another day. If you must leave early, name the sumo moment you most want to keep, such as the makuuchi ring entrance, and design the hard departure around it rather than discovering the conflict from your seat.
Carry only the sumo-day essentials
Use a small bag for the live ticket device, identification, essential medicine and compact winter accessories. The Association’s spectator terms allow bag inspection and prohibit bottles, cans, dangerous objects and objects the organiser judges may interfere with other spectators. The terms we checked do not say that every large suitcase is automatically banned, so this article does not make that claim. “Do not bring it” is editorial advice reached by comparing three facts: inspection is allowed, obstructive objects are prohibited, and we have not verified an official large-bag service for this tournament.
Once the suitcase is safely elsewhere, you stop being an airline passenger for a while. You can become the person who notices how far an unamplified voice travels across Kokugikan—and perhaps remembers the shikona it carried.
