Planning a future visit? The September 2026 Tokyo conditions below are historical examples. Official pages may now describe a different tournament. Choose your event in the Japan Sumo Association’s ticket information and check its date, venue and conditions before booking. Booking links reviewed: 10 October 2026.
Wheelchair seats for the September 2026 Tokyo tournament require advance telephone booking. The wheelchair user sits in front and the companion behind—not side by side. The operator checks wheelchair dimensions during booking, and a width of 65 cm or more must be declared at that point.
Do not plan around buying this seat at the door. The official page separates the seat reservation, the named companion, entry documents and any accessible parking request. Handling those pieces in advance leaves more attention for the arena itself.
Detailed description of this diagram
Five cards run from left to right. Card 1 uses a telephone symbol for the published advance-reservation method. Card 2 puts an overall-width line and '65 cm or more' beneath an abstract wheelchair. This is the threshold that must be reported when applying, not a seat or route width and not a passage guarantee. Card 3 shows two abstract people on a form with a check, representing the requirement to provide fixed user and companion names. Card 4 uses an arrow as the viewing direction and places the wheelchair user in front with the companion behind. The people, wheelchair and spacing are not to scale. Card 5 combines a wheelchair, document copy and two people for bringing one's own wheelchair, carrying the required certificate or diagnosis copy, and entering together. No real entrance, seat, car park, route, step, gradient, width or availability is shown.

September 2026 reservation conditions
The Japan Sumo Association directs customers to its dedicated ticket telephone line. One call can book one tournament date. The full names of both the wheelchair user and companion are required; a reservation cannot be made while the visitors are still undecided. The seat is not available to non-wheelchair users except for the named companion.
Wheelchair-seat availability, price and telephone hours can change. This guide does not claim a current vacancy. Ask the official operator separately about the requested date, seat, companion and parking; the status of general tickets does not establish whether a wheelchair place can be booked.
September 2026 seating and entry arrangements
The wheelchair user is positioned in front and the companion behind. This matters if both visitors expected to watch shoulder to shoulder. Discuss the arrangement before purchase rather than discovering it inside a busy arena.
The companion cannot enter alone. The pair use the front wheelchair entrance together. The official instructions also require a copy of a disability certificate or medical certificate and warn that identity may be checked. Wheelchairs are not loaned by the venue, so the visit must be planned around bringing the user’s own chair.
Parking arrangements recorded for September 2026
General Kokugikan access information says there is no visitor parking and recommends public transport. A limited dedicated parking area exists for customers who have already reserved wheelchair seating, but it requires another advance reservation and is first-come, first-served. A seat booking does not automatically secure a parking space.
The association gives walking estimates of two minutes from the west exit of JR Ryogoku Station and five minutes from Toei Oedo Line Ryogoku Station. These are general estimates, not accessibility guarantees. Crowds, lifts and an individual’s mobility needs can increase the real journey time, so check railway assistance separately when needed.
Questions to settle during the booking call
The published booking rules do not answer every question about an individual visit. Write down the wheelchair’s width and length, the assistance needed, and any difficulty with turning or transferring before calling. These are preparation notes, not additional venue requirements.
- Which route should you use from the entrance to the booked position?
- Where is the suitable toilet, and how should you reach it from that position?
- Can the companion provide the required assistance from the seat behind?
- What should you do if a train lift is unavailable or the arrival time changes?
- If driving, has the separate parking reservation been confirmed?
Ask for a current answer about the exact seat and your needs. A published front-and-back seating arrangement does not establish the view, reach between the seats, turning space or time needed to leave through a crowd.
The day before, check the booking reference, companion’s name, required document copy, wheelchair and return route together. If the proposed seat or route does not meet your needs, ask the organiser about an alternative before travelling.
