Follow a New Sumo Recruit Without Confusing Examination, Maezumo and the Banzuke

Passing the new-recruit examination, appearing in maezumo and later receiving a place on the banzuke are not one event. Begin with the Association’s successful-candidate list. If it has not yet published names, do not translate that silence into “no recruits.” Add one line only when each official stage becomes visible.

Do not rush the first record

On September 4, 2026, the September tournament page said successful new-recruit candidates would be posted when decided. That is a pending publication state, not an announcement of zero candidates. Do not borrow a name, stable or expected appearance from rumours and place it in the factual ledger.

A successful examination listing is also different from a maezumo appearance, a daily result and a later banzuke entry. If a name or shikona changes between records, verify the identity through an official profile rather than assuming a match.

What to record through the tournament

Maezumo and lower-division participation do not follow the same one-bout-every-day pattern as sekitori competition. Record an opponent and result only on a date where an official record shows them. Do not manufacture a win, loss or absence for a blank day.

When viewing is available, choose one modest observation: the starting posture, first foot direction, or one ritual action that prompted a question. A short clip cannot establish personality, maturity or future rank. Keep descriptions smaller than predictions.

New recruits make me want to resist completing a story too early. First I learn the pronunciation of a name, later the stable, and only then perhaps one visible step on the dohyo. Watching the official record accumulate is itself part of becoming attached to a wrestler.

Update rule

Date each check of the successful-candidate list, wrestler profile and banzuke. Update the factual block only when a new stage is officially recorded. Do not state participation, absence, a name change or promotion before an authoritative publication.

What One Bout Cannot Tell Us

One bout shows a movement sequence and an official result. Do not infer personality, emotion, injury, fatigue or the next strategy from a single moment. Record the visible cue in plain language, compare multiple days, and wait for an official announcement. Inner feelings remain unknown without the person’s attributed words.
