After arriving by Shinkansen, move from the JR gates to Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line and take a train toward Nakamozu for Namba. Shin-Osaka is M13 and Namba is M20, which gives an international visitor two simple visual checks. From Namba, follow the arena’s official exit and walking guidance. Construction, disruption or a closed exit can change the details, so current official station information wins.

Shin-Osaka combines Shinkansen, conventional JR and subway areas. A route result may show only train movement and hide the walk between systems. On a first visit, treat the arrival platform-to-subway platform transfer as a full part of the itinerary rather than free time.

Divide the route into three sections

Section one is Shinkansen platform to the relevant JR gate. Section two is JR territory to Osaka Metro’s Midosuji Line. Section three is Namba station to EDION Arena Osaka. Save both JR West’s station map and Osaka Metro’s Shin-Osaka information; neither map alone explains the whole handover.

Follow signs for Osaka Metro or the Midosuji Line. Confirm the Nakamozu direction before boarding. At Namba, do not take the first stairs to street level automatically. Compare the station map with the exit identified by the venue. If you will return by subway after the tournament, photograph the exit number and gate name.

Text-free non-map diagram separating JR, Osaka Metro and venue information, live rail handoff unknowns and a confirmation fallback
FACT: JR, Osaka Metro and the venue publish separate station, line and approach information. UNKNOWN: live service, platform/car, lifts, transfers, exit, outdoor movement and admission continuity. Pause and recheck current official information or staff. Not a rail map; checked 4 September 2026.
Detailed description of this diagram

The left card joins three independent source-domain boxes only with dashed lines for JR arrival, Osaka Metro station information and venue information. The middle card places a stop block between two boxes because live transfer and the journey from ground exit to admission are not guaranteed. The right card branches from stop to rechecking or another confirmed option. It depicts no rail line, map, direction, station interior, platform, transfer count, exit, street, distance, duration or fare.

Stop the suitcase before the subway

If you have a large case, try your hotel or Shin-Osaka storage before entering the subway. A locker or baggage icon on an official map identifies a facility, not an empty space reserved for your arrival. Save a second location and allow time to return to it after sumo.

Travellers using lifts, families with children and visitors reading unfamiliar signs should reject the shortest theoretical transfer. Add lift queues, a restroom stop and ticket or IC-card orientation separately. A calm transfer is faster than reversing direction with a suitcase.

Let the station complexity end at the dohyo

Reaching your seat after several transport layers can feel like enough work for one morning. Do not answer that feeling by trying to learn every wrestler immediately. Watch only the first step after one tachiai. The journey contracts from many coloured lines to one foot on clay, and that contrast is one of the pleasures of travelling for sumo.

Reset hands and feet at every transfer

Confirmed fact: JR West and Osaka Metro diagrams provide the basis for the JR-to-subway connection at Shin-Osaka and exits at Namba.

What remains unknown: Actual time and crowding through gates, lifts, platforms and arena entrance remain unknown until the day.

Reasoned inference: Comparing stages on official diagrams suggests gates and vertical movement can be a larger failure point than the train ride. Confidence is medium; this identifies location, not minutes. Works and temporary routing can overturn it.

Editorial suggestion: At each transfer, stop and account for ticket phone, bag, child and mobility aid before following the next arrow. This is not a station rule; it keeps hands, feet and companions together.

Fallback: Use the next train and ask staff for the current low-step route if needed.
