At 7–4 after Day 11 in July, Asasuiryu still had four bouts to wrestle. He won all four, against Tamawashi, Midorifuji, Arashifuji and Hatsuyama, to finish 11–4 before his September Makuuchi debut.

Twenty-one wins in the last two tournaments

March’s 6–9 was followed by 10–5 in May and 11–4 in July. September brings Maegashira 15. Those closing opponents tell us more than the promotion announcement alone.

A useful question about close contact

His listed preference is pushing, but force-outs account for 45% of 53 recent wins, compared with push-outs at 21% and under-shoulder swing-downs at 8%. These were six Juryo tournaments.

The new question is whether he can build those force-out finishes against Makuuchi opposition. His 175cm, 120kg frame does not tell the whole story.
