Before attending with a support person, agree on four things: whether every ticket can be presented correctly, the route among the seat, restroom and break point, emergency communication, and time when the visitor wants to experience sumo without continuous explanation. The September 2026 wheelchair-space price covers one wheelchair user and one companion. It does not promise that an additional companion can sit nearby, so confirm seating and support arrangements separately.
Without a plan, the visitor can spend the day receiving instructions while the support person never looks at the ring. Divide only the essential tasks, then protect a little attention for both people.
Count people and tickets before planning care
The official September price list says that an ¥8,000 wheelchair-space ticket covers one wheelchair user and one companion. If the party has three or more people, the document does not establish where anyone else will sit or whether a nearby ordinary seat can be arranged. Ask before purchase rather than assuming that a separately booked seat will be adjacent.
The same principle applies outside wheelchair seating. Masu boxes and individual chair seats have different sales units. A support role is not itself an admission credential. Confirm the ticket and place for every person, using the latest official sales information rather than a fixed availability claim in this guide.
Do not leave every QR ticket on one unprepared phone
The September spectator notice requires advance distribution when multiple visitors use QR tickets. Undistributed tickets, screenshots and printed QR copies are not accepted for entry.
If the visitor finds device operation difficult, review the ticket service’s official transfer method before travel. Do not arrive at the gate and begin account recovery for the first time. Check battery power and sign-in state the night before. If a different entry method is necessary, ask the organiser; this article does not invent an exception.
Divide four functions
Read through these functions and give each to the person best placed to do it:
- Programme: track the desired wrestler and the planned departure time.
- Route: remember the seat, restroom, break and exit landmarks.
- Condition: follow the visitor’s established plan for fluids, medication or position changes.
- Communication: convert staff directions or emergency announcements into the preferred format.
The support person does not have to own all four. The visitor might track the programme while the companion remembers the route. Personal care and medical tasks remain governed by the person’s plan and professional advice, not by a generic website checklist.
Hear the arrival explanation together
On entry, ask about the route to the seat, an accessible restroom, a place to request a break and the nearest staffed point. A mapped symbol does not prove that every passage is operating on a particular day. When possible, let both people hear or read the explanation instead of filtering all information through one person.
Japan’s Ministry of Health advises disabled visitors to identify accessible restrooms and lifts before an outing and to check the medical-room location at a sports venue. That is national planning guidance, not a guarantee of a specific Kokugikan service. Use it to form questions for staff.
Release the ordinary plan in an emergency
The Association’s spectator contract requires compliance with staff instructions and prohibits occupying aisles, stairs, entrances or evacuation routes as viewing locations. During an emergency, do not insist on the lift or route used earlier. Follow current announcements and staff direction.
Agree on a meeting point if separated, an emergency contact, and—when the visitor consents—a short information card for circumstances in which communication becomes difficult. Include only the personal information that is genuinely needed.
Make “no commentary” part of the job
A support person may feel obliged to explain every sound and movement. More words do not automatically create more enjoyment. During either the juryo or makuuchi ring entrance, try thirty seconds when both people simply take in the procession. Afterwards, ask which single kesho-mawashi caught the eye.
Careful safety language can create a moment in which language is no longer necessary. That shared discovery is part of access too.
A two-person note for the night before
- Ticket type, seat and QR transfer state for everyone
- Programme and route responsibilities
- Restroom, break and exit questions
- Stop signal if the visitor’s condition changes
- Meeting point if separated
- One part of the programme to enjoy without commentary
